Graduate Job Search Struggles: Why University Graduates Struggle to Find Jobs & How to Overcome Them

Graduate job search struggles are a common challenge worldwide, leaving many recent graduates struggling to secure employment despite having a university degree. While graduating is a significant milestone filled with hopes of starting a successful career, the reality of the job market can be far more challenging. Many graduates face difficulties finding suitable jobs due to factors like limited experience, high competition, and lack of skills. This article explores the key reasons behind graduate job search struggles and offers practical strategies to help graduates navigate the job market more effectively. Also, this article shares real-life examples and statistics to provide actionable steps to overcome common obstacles and improve job prospects.

1. Barriers of having Zero Work Experience

The biggest barrier for recent graduates is a lack of practical experience during their job search journey. 91% of employers prefer candidates with relevant work experience, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Many employers prioritize candidates who have hands-on experience in addition to academic qualifications. Although university education provides theoretical knowledge, it fails to meet in offering practical training. For instance, a business administration graduate with zero work experience may struggle to land an entry-level job in the competitive corporate sector.

For instance, Rohan Rajput, a recent marketing graduate, applied for over 100 jobs without success. Despite his academic achievements, Rohan lacked even an internship or Co-op experience, which many employers require. After volunteering at a local non-profit organization for three months through the placement of the Career Bridging Program (CBP) by the Regina Open Door Society, he gained practical experience and secured a full-time marketing assistant position. This highlights the importance of internships, volunteering, and part-time work during the university to enhance employability. While the university provides academic knowledge, practical experience prepares students for the real business world.

In a growing business world, the job market is highly competitive, especially for entry-level positions. With thousands of graduates entering the workforce each year, the competition for limited job openings is intense. For example, in 2023, Canada saw over 500,000 new graduates entering the Canadian job market, creating a saturated pool of applicants. This makes it difficult for graduates to stand out among other applicants.

Michael, a computer science graduate, applied for several software developer positions but he faced difficulty securing interviews. He decided to differentiate himself by taking additional online courses in data science and creating a portfolio of projects on GitHub. These efforts helped him land a job at a startup, showcasing how going the extra mile can improve job prospects. This demonstrates the importance of acquiring additional skills and showcasing unique competencies. As a fresher, graduate job search struggle is undeniable due to having vast competition in the job market. Therefore, recent graduates should be aware of the workforce demand and competition before landing their job field.

3. Mismatch Between Degree and Job Market Demands

Another common challenge for recent graduates is the mismatch between university degrees and job market demands. The rapid evolution of industries means that some degrees may not align with the current needs of employers. For example, technology and digital skills are increasingly in demand all over the world, yet many graduates lack sufficient training and experience in these areas. A report by the World Economic Forum highlights that nearly 50% of all employees will need reskilling by 2025 due to technological advancements such as the introduction of AI.

Sadia, an English literature graduate from Simon Fraser University, found it difficult to find jobs in her field. After researching market demands, she enrolled in a digital marketing course and eventually secured a job as a content marketer, demonstrating the importance of adaptability and reskilling. Therefore, this goes without saying that it is important to adapt market demand while pursuing a university degree.

4. Choosing the Wrong Major

Choosing the wrong major can significantly impact a graduate’s ability to find a job in this competitive business world. Many students select their majors at the university based on parental pressure, societal expectations, or a lack of career guidance, rather than their interests, passion or market demand. This can lead to dissatisfaction and limited job opportunities after graduation.

For example, James pursued a degree in management under family influence, despite having a passion for technology. After a tremendous struggle to find a job in his field, he decided to take coding bootcamps and transition into web development, which helped him secure a job in the tech industry. This story highlights the importance of choosing a major that aligns with both personal interests and market needs. It is highly important to consult with career advisors or mentors before choosing a major at the university. Because a right major with market demand can reduce your unnecessary tensions, frustrations, and stresses while you have a career counsellor who can guide you, show you the right pathway, and help you choose correct options.

5. Graduate Job Search Struggles: Lack of Soft Skills

There is no doubt that soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving, are essential in any workplace. However, many graduates focus solely on academic performance and overlook the development of these crucial skills. A study by LinkedIn found that 92% of talent professionals consider soft skills more important than technical skills, (Jaffer, 2025). Many job seekers with a university degree struggle to secure a job during the interview, due to a lack of communication skills. Although they have adequate academic performance, technical skills, or knowledge, they often fail to sell themselves during the interview due to a lack of proper communication skills.

Zayed, a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Regina, struggled massively during his job interviews due to poor communication skills. He failed many interviews and realized his weakness in communication skills. After attending several public speaking workshops and joining a local Toastmasters International club, he improved his confidence and secured a job as a junior engineer at a reputed organization. Graduates should focus on developing strong communication and interpersonal skills to enhance employability. So, there is no alternative to improving communication skills, confidence, and problem-solving skills, when you land in the job market. These skills massively help to reduce your job search struggles during the journey.

6. Unrealistic Job Expectations

In the modern era, I have seen many graduates have unrealistic job expectations regarding salary, job roles, and career growth. They often aim for high-paying jobs or prestigious companies without considering entry-level positions or smaller organizations. This mindset can delay employment opportunities and increase frustration. Although many graduates have soft skills, the ability to work, or a proper degree, they always have an unrealistic mindset regarding high-profile jobs in the reputed companies. As a result, they experience a series of frustrations, low confidence and missing the right opportunity at the right time.

Anannya, a psychology graduate, initially aimed for a counselor position at a reputed mental health clinic. After several interviews in the various clinics, she accepted a role as an administrative assistant at a small clinic in Regina, where she gained valuable experience that eventually helped her transition into a counselor role at a prestigious medical center.

7. Limited Job Search Strategies

A limited job search strategy can also hinder graduates from finding employment. Many graduates solely rely on online job portals such as Indeed, CareerBuilder, or Glassdoor, which is not always effective. Networking, attending career fairs, and leveraging social media platforms like LinkedIn can significantly improve job search outcomes. According to a survey by Lou Adler, 85% of jobs are filled through networking. Also, visiting a career fair increases the chances to secure a prospective job. Candidates get an opportunity to introduce themselves to hiring managers during the career fair. Many graduates neglect to take this unique opportunity.

Deepan, an HR graduate, found his first job as an HR Payroll Administrator through a career fair, who took an incredible opportunity to meet the hiring manager at the fair with a prepared resume. He introduced him to a hiring manager and showed his sincere interest in Payroll. Later, he learned more about the positions, improved relationships, and received guidance regarding the job expectations. This experience highlights the importance of expanding job search strategies beyond traditional methods.

Finding a job after obtaining a university degree can be challenging, but understanding the reasons behind these struggles is the first step toward overcoming them. Graduates should focus on gaining practical experience such as volunteering jobs, placement, or co-op, developing soft skills such as communication, customer service experience, or problem-solving skills, and adopting diverse job search strategies. Additionally, universities and industries must work together to bridge the gap between education and job market demands. With the right mindset, continuous learning, and perseverance, graduates can successfully transition from university to the professional world. By embracing lifelong learning and adaptability, recent graduates can increase their chances of building rewarding careers.
